mean（中間の）+ while（しばらくの間） の組み立てで、中英語 menewhile を経た語。「ある出来事が続いているその合間に」を表す。

while の側は「休む・静まる」を表す *kʷyeh₁- に遡り、もとは「ひと区切りの時間」。同じ根から出た quiet（静かな）と並べると、「動きを止めたひとときの時間」というつながりが見える。

用法は二つ。「その間に」と同時進行を示す使い方（Meanwhile, the sauce simmers.）と、「一方で」と場面や視点を切り替える使い方（Meanwhile, in Tokyo ...）。名詞寄りの meantime と対にして押さえるとよい。

*kʷyeh₁-休む・静まる
「活動をやめて穏やかな状態に入る」という語根で、英語では quiet（quiet・quietly）、quit（quit・acquit）、quie（quiesce・requiem）、while（while・meanwhile）、coy（coy・coyness）などの形で現れる。
