mean（中間の）+ time（時） の合成語で、中英語 menetime にさかのぼる。「二つの出来事にはさまれた時間」が原義である。
ほとんどの場合 in the meantime（その間に・それはさておき）という形で使い、「本題が進むまでのつなぎの時間」を表す。for the meantime は「当面のところ」。
意味の近い meanwhile が副詞として単独で使えるのに対し、meantime は in the をともなう名詞の形が中心。「あいだの時間」と直訳しておけば使い分けを迷わない。
