misfitの語源と覚え方
覚え方
mis-（悪く・誤って）+ fit（合う・ふさわしい）。「うまく合っていないもの」が原義で、もとは体に合わない衣服を指した。
そこから人に移り、「周囲になじめない人・場違いな人」を指す名詞として定着した。a social misfit（社会になじめない人）のように使う。
「合わない」という動詞・形容詞の用法もあるが、現代ではほぼ名詞。mis- は「外れている」、fit は「型に合う」で、「型から外れた人」と読むと意味を取り違えない。
