receptionistの語源と覚え方

reception（受け入れること・受付）+ -ist（〜をする人） で「受付係」。来客や電話を最初に受け止める役目の人を指す。
reception の背後には *wre-（後ろへ・再び） と *kap-（つかむ・保持する） があり、「差し出されたものを手元に受け取る」が芯。訪問者を受け取る場所が reception（受付・フロント）で、そこに立つ人が receptionist になる。
*kap- の仲間には receive（受け取る）・capture（捕らえる）・capable（受け止められる→有能な）がいる。-ist は「その仕事をする人」なので、receptionist は職名としてそのまま使える（比較: pianist、specialist）。
