recoilの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古フランス語 reculer（後ずさりする） から入った語で、後ろへ下がる動きが原義。銃を撃ったときの反動（the recoil of a rifle）と、その反動で体が後ろへ跳ねる動きの両方を指す。
そこから、嫌なものに触れて思わず身を引く反応へ広がった。recoil in horror（ぞっとして後ずさる）、recoil from the idea（その考えに嫌悪を覚える）のように、from を伴う形が多い。物理的な反動と心理的な忌避が、「思わず引く」という一つの動きでつながっている。
さらに「（悪事などが）本人に跳ね返る」意味もあり、The plan recoiled on him.（計画が本人に跳ね返った）のように使う。ばねやコイルの巻き直しを指す re-coil とは別語なので、文脈で判断する。
