古フランス語 esquatir（押しつぶす）= es-（ラテン語 ex-「徹底的に」）+ quatir（ラテン語 coāctus「寄せ集められた」） から squat が生まれ、その動名詞・現在分詞が squatting。体を押し縮めた姿勢を取ることを指す。
運動としての squatting のほか、空き家や空き地に無断で住み着くことも squatting と呼ばれ、法律の場でも使われる。その人が squatter。
coāctus は *kom-（共に）と *h₂eǵ-（駆り立てる）に連なり、同じ組み合わせから cogent（説得力のある）や coagulate（凝固する）が来ている。
