ラテン語 temperātūra（温度・気温）は、temperō（調和させる・調節する）に -tūra（具体的な結果や活動を表す名詞語尾） が付いた形。temperō には *ten-（伸ばす） と *temh₁-（切る） のイメージが重なり、伸ばしたり切ったりして、物事をちょうどよく整える感覚がある。
そこから「調整された状態・適度な状態」が、体や空気の「温度」へと発展した。temperature は、temper を見たら「適切な具合に調節する」と覚えると、温度だけでなく、気分や状況の調整という関連もつかみやすい。
