覚え方
trail は、古フランス語 trailler（引きずる・跡を追う）につながる語。後ろへ長く続くものや、誰かが通ったあとを追う動きが中心にある。A scarf trailed behind her. なら、スカーフが後ろへ長く垂れている場面。人や動物のあとを追って進む動詞にもなる。
名詞の a mountain trail は「山道」、a trail of footprints は「連なった足跡」。人が通る道と、通ったあとに残るしるしを、一本の続く線として結びつけられる。また trail behind は「後ろから付いていく・後れを取る」で、競争の説明にも使う。前へ進むものの後ろに続く感覚を押さえると、衣服を引きずる動き、足跡、後れを取る状況を、ばらばらな意味として覚えずに済む。
