breakerの語源と覚え方

中英語 brekere（違反者・悪人）= brecan（壊す・割る）+ -ere（動作主の名詞をつくる）。この組み立てがそのまま現代の break + -er に対応する。
中英語では掟を破る人を指したが、現代では壊すもの全般に広がり、砕く機械、電気の回路を断つブレーカー、岸で砕ける波まで同じ語で呼ぶ。
brecan の語根 *bʰreg-（壊す・砕く）は fragment（断片）・fracture（骨折）・fragile（壊れやすい）とも同じ。
