ラテン語 commemorō（追憶する・記念する）は、con-（共に・完全に）+ memorō（過去の出来事を口述し、他者に思い出させる） という組み立て。複数の人の心に記憶を呼び戻すことから、「記念する・追悼する」という意味になった。過去分詞は commemorātus で、英語では語尾 -ate が動詞を作って commemorate になっている。
memorō の *(s)mer-（深く考える・責任を割り当てる）という古いイメージから、memory・memorial・remember などを連想できる。memor を見たら「心に刻んだ記憶」、con- が付いたら「皆で記憶を呼び戻す」と考えると、commemorate の意味を思い出しやすい。
