覚え方
ラテン語 observō（観察する・注意を払う）＝ob-（〜に向かって）＋ servō（守る・保つ、*ser-「見守る」）。「対象に向かって目を離さず見守る」が原義。
そこから意味が二方向に伸びる。①「注意深く見る・気づく・（所見を）述べる」、②「（規則・慣習・祝日を）守る」。observe the rules は「規則を見る」ではなく「規則を遵守する」で、こちらは「保つ」の側。
*ser-（見守る・保つ）は preserve（前もって保つ）・conserve・reserve（取っておく）の serv と同じ。観測所は observatory。
