覚え方
condensation（結露・凝縮）+ trail（後ろに引きずる跡） を縮めて作った合成語で「飛行機雲」。つづりの con- は接頭辞ではなく condensation の頭である点が面白い。
高空を飛ぶジェット機の排気に含まれる水蒸気が、冷たい大気で急に凝結して氷の粒になり、機体の後ろに白い筋を引く。まさに「凝結の跡」。
vapor trail とも言う。動詞としても使い、jets contrailing across the sky（空に飛行機雲を引く）。似た作りの縮約語に smog（smoke + fog）がある。
