leg はラテン語 legō(集める・選ぶ)、e は「外へ」。よいものを選り分ける目を持っている、というのが原義である。
はじめは「えり好みする」という否定的な響きもあったが、やがて選び抜かれた趣味のよさを指すようになり、「優雅な・洗練された」に落ち着いた。人や服装だけでなく、an elegant solution(無駄がなく鮮やかな解法)のように、簡潔で無駄がないものにも使うのがこの語の面白いところである。
elect(選び出す)と同じ leg/lect が見えると、芯がつかめる。
