古英語 feþer（羽根） から。*peth₂-（広げる） につながり、広げるもの＝翼・羽というイメージが根にある。
鳥の羽の軽さ・柔らかさから比喩が広がり、light as a feather（羽のように軽い）、a feather in one's cap（誇るべき手柄）、birds of a feather flock together（類は友を呼ぶ）といった言い回しが定着した。動詞では feather one's nest（自分の巣を整える→私腹を肥やす）。
同じ「広げる」の仲間に fathom（広げた両腕の幅→尋・見抜く）がある。なお羽毛の全体をまとめて言うなら plumage、寝具などの詰め物なら down（綿羽）と使い分ける。
