中英語 flawmen から。中心にあるのはラテン語 flamma（炎）で、フランス語を経て flawme / flaume といった形をとり、今の flame になった。
その -ing 形が flaming で、文字どおり「燃えている」。そこから「燃えるように赤い」（flaming red hair）や「激しい・情熱的な」へ広がった。英国の口語では a flaming idiot のように、いら立ちを込めた強調語にもなる。
flamma の *bʰel-（燃える・輝く）は blaze（炎）・bleach（白くする）・blank（白い）と同じ系統。
