ide は心に描かれた姿すなわちラテン語 idea（理型・観念）、al は「〜に関する」という形容詞を作る語尾。心に描いた完全な型に関する、が芯で、フランス語 idéal を経て「理想の・理想」になった。
奥にあるのは「見る」というイメージで、よく見て捉えた最良の姿が、現実に目指す目標になったと考えるとよい。
現実の個々の物ではなく心の中の完成形を指すので、an ideal solution（申し分ない解決策）のように、条件に完全に合う場合に使う。
