in（中へ）＋sect（切る）。ラテン語 īnsecō は「切り込む」で、そこから出た īnsectum は「切れ込みの入ったもの」。頭・胸・腹がくびれで区切られた体つきから、そのまま「昆虫」を指すようになった。
sect の仲間は section（区分）・dissect（解剖する）で、どれも「切る」。insect を見たら「体に切れ込みのある生き物」と捉えると、姿と意味が直結する。ギリシャ語から訳し換えた entomology（昆虫学）も、同じ「切り分けられた」発想である。
