中期フランス語 lamenter（声をあげて嘆く）から。胸の内でしずかに悲しむのではなく、声に出して嘆くのがこの語の芯である。

動詞では lament the loss of ...（〜を失ったことを嘆く）、lament that ...（〜だと嘆く）。名詞では「嘆きの言葉」、とくに死者を悼む詩や歌＝「哀歌・挽歌」を指し、a lament for the dead（死者への哀歌）のように使う。

形容詞 lamentable は「嘆かわしい・お粗末な」で、悲しみより呆れの含みが強い点に注意。lament は硬い書き言葉なので、日常の「残念がる」には regret や complain を使う。
