ラテン語 metamorphōsis（変身・変容）から入った語で、英語では meta-（変化）+ -morph（形）+ -osis（過程・状態） と分解できる。「形が変わっていく過程」がそのまま意味になっている。

生物学では幼虫からさなぎ、成虫へと姿を変える「変態」、比喩では人や組織の劇的な変貌を指す。複数形は metamorphoses と変わる点に注意。

morph を見たら「形」。morphology（形態学）・amorphous（形のない）・polymorphic（多形の）が同じ仲間で、meta- が「後・超えて・変化」を添える。
