覚え方
real（本物の・実際の）+ -ity（形容詞から抽象名詞を作る） で「現実」。同じ組み立てのフランス語 réalité（現実）= réel（現実の）+ -ité とも重なる。
「実際にそうであること」が芯なので、in reality（実際には）は建前や見かけを覆すときの合図になる。face reality（現実を直視する）・harsh reality（厳しい現実）のように、望みとは別に存在してしまうものという色合いを帯びやすい。
補足: virtual reality（仮想現実）・augmented reality（拡張現実）・reality TV（現実の人を撮る番組）と、複合語では「作り物ではない側」を指す軸として働く。real estate（不動産）の real も「実体のある」から来た同じ語。
