覚え方
real（本物の・実際の）に、形容詞を抽象名詞にする -ity が付いて「実際にそうであること」。フランス語 réalité（réel「現実の」＋ -ité）を英語の部品に置き換えた形。
芯は「見かけや建前ではなく、そうであること」。in reality（実際には）は表向きを覆す合図で、face reality（現実を直視する）・harsh reality（厳しい現実）は、望むかどうかと関わりなく存在してしまうもの、という色合いを帯びる。
virtual reality（仮想現実）や reality TV（現実の人を撮る番組）では「作り物ではない側」を指す。real estate（不動産）の real も「実体のある」から来た同じ語。
