覚え方
retire（引退する）+ -ment（行為やその結果を表す）。フランス語の retirement（退くこと・撤退）と同じ作りで、「身を引くこと」が原義。
retire はもともと軍隊が陣を後ろへ引くような動きを表し、「表舞台から後ろへ下がる」のが芯。そこから職を退く「引退・退職」、さらに退いたあとの期間そのものを指すようになった。
決まった言い方の多い語で、in retirement（引退して）・early retirement（早期退職）・retirement age（定年）・retirement savings（老後資金）。引退した人は retiree。
