中世ラテン語 substantiatus(実体を持つ・確立された)につながる substantiate は、主張や考えに確かな実体を与えるイメージを持つ。単に「そうだと言う」のではなく、証拠によって内容を固めることから、「実証する・立証する」という意味になった。
substantiate a claim は「主張を裏付ける」、substantiate an allegation は「 आरोपを証拠で立証する」という使い方。抽象的な主張に実体を与えると考えると、substance(実体・内容)や substantial(かなりの・実質的な)とのつながりも覚えやすい。
