- 英語affirm断言する
覚え方
中英語 affermen（確認する・断言する）を経て、ラテン語 affirmō（断言する・確証する）へさかのぼる。英語として読めば af-（〜へ）+ firm（固くする・安定させる）、つまり「発言を固めて揺るがないものにする」。
芯の firmō（強くする・堅固にする）は *dʰer-（保つ・支える）の系統。firm（堅い）・confirm（確認する）・firmament と同族で、firm は「しっかり支える」。
上級審が原判決を affirm する（支持する）、宗教的な宣誓の代わりに affirm する、といった硬い用法もある。名詞は affirmation、形容詞は affirmative。
