tonightの語源と覚え方

中英語 tonyght は 古英語 tō（〜へ・〜に向かって）+ niht（夜）。「この夜に向けて」という句がそのまま一語に固まった。
today も同じ tō で始まる組み立てで、to- の部分が「この〜」に当たる。
名詞としても副詞としても使える点に注意（Tonight is cold / See you tonight）。night 単独と違い、tonight は必ず「今夜」という特定の夜を指す。
