覚え方

union はラテン語 ūniō（単一のものとして結合された状態）に由来し、ūnus（一つ）+ -iō（行為や状態を表す名詞語尾）と分解できる。一つにする行為、または一つになった状態が、英語の「結合・統一」になった。

複数の人や団体が一つのまとまりになることから、union は特に労働者が一つに結集する「労働組合」も指す。uni- を見たら「一つ」、union を見たら「一つにまとまること」と連想すると、unite（結合する）や unity（統一）も覚えやすい。
