ラテン語 abōminābilis（忌まわしい・憎むべき）= abōminor（忌み嫌う・嫌悪する）+ -bilis（「〜されうる」の形容詞語尾）。「嫌悪されるべき」が原義。

-bilis は英語の -able / -ible にあたる語尾で、visible・portable と同じ系列。abominable は「嫌悪せずにいられない」ほどひどい、という強い否定の形容詞で、abominable weather（ひどい天気）のように日常でも使う。
