painfulの語源と覚え方
覚え方
pain（痛み）+ -ful（〜に満ちた）。中英語 paynful 以来の素直な作りで、「痛みに満ちている」がそのまま意味になっている。
pain の背後は *kʷey-（支払う）。もとは「罪に対して支払う代償＝罰」で、そこから罰としての苦痛、さらに一般の痛みへ広がった。penalty（罰則）・punish（罰する）が同じ流れにある。-ful の背後は *pleh₁-（満たす）で、full・plenty と同族。
体の痛みだけでなく、精神的につらいことにも使う（a painful memory、It's painful to watch.）。副詞は painfully（painfully slow＝じれったいほど遅い）。
