ラテン語 afflīctiō（苦しみ・苦悩）= afflīgō（打ち倒す・叩きつける）+ -tiō（行為・状態）。英語としては af-（〜へ）+ afflict（苦しめる）+ -ion で、**「打ちつけられた状態」**＝苦悩。
苦しみそのものにも、原因となる病気や不幸にも使う硬めの語（a rare affliction＝まれな疾患）。afflict（苦しめる）・afflicted（苦しんでいる）と一組で覚える。
conflict（衝突）・inflict（苦痛を与える）と同じ「打つ」の仲間。af-（〜へ打ちつける）→ 降りかかる苦しみと読めばよい。
