compareの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 comparō（比べる・対にする）は compār（対等の・同輩）+ -ō（動詞をつくる）。「対等なもの同士として組にする」が原義で、比較とはまず同じ土俵に載せることだ、という発想が見える。
そこから compare は「比べる・対照する」。compare A with B は違いも共通点も含めて突き合わせること、compare A to B は「たとえる」に傾く、という使い分けがある。
compār は peer（同輩）・par（同水準）・pair（一対）と同族。「対等に並べる」 を芯にすれば、comparison（比較）・comparable（比べられる・遜色ない）・comparative（比較の）もひとつながりで覚えられる。
