consonantの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 cōnsonāns（子音）から。母音のように単独では響かず、母音と「一緒に」鳴ってはじめて音節になる音、という捉え方がそのまま名前になった語である。
先頭の con- はさかのぼると *sem-（一つ・共に） につながる。「一つになって・共に」の感覚で、音声学の用語としての「子音」だけでなく、形容詞で「調和した・一致した（consonant with 〜）」の意味にもなる。
*sem- の仲間は same（同じ）・similar（似た）・assemble（寄せ集める）・simultaneous（同時の）。対語は vowel（母音）で、vowel なしでは立てない音が consonant と覚えるとよい。
