ラテン語 contemporārius（同時代の・同時期に存在する）に由来する。con-（共に・完全に）は「共に」を表し、語の中核にある時間のイメージと合わさって、「同じ時代に共に存在する」という意味になった。con- は kom-（共に・完全に） にさかのぼる。
そこから contemporary は「同時代の」、さらに「現代の」へと広がった。同時代に生きる人を指して「同時代の人」ともいえる。con- を見たら『共に』、tempor- を見たら『時間』と考えると、contemporary・contemporaneous などの意味をつかみやすい。時間を区切るイメージに関係する temh₁-（切る） も手がかりになる。
