fraud はラテン語 fraus（詐欺・欺瞞）から来た語で、不正な利益を得るために事実を偽ったり、人をだましたりする行為を指す。そこから、行為そのものだけでなく、そのような手段を使う人や仕組みまで「詐欺」と呼ぶようになった。
