中英語 hissen（シューと音を立てる）にさかのぼる、音そのものをまねて生まれた語。s の音を長く引くと蛇の声にも蒸気の漏れる音にもなる、というだけの単純な写生が、そのまま単語になっている。

動詞では蛇・猫・やかん・ガス漏れが「シューという」。人にも使い、観客が不満を示して「シーッと野次る」。名詞は「シュー音」「野次」。The crowd hissed（客がブーイングした）のように、拍手のちょうど反対側にある音である。

つづりで s が二つ並んでいること自体が、音の長さを表していると思えば形も覚えやすい。buzz（ブーン）・sizzle（ジュージュー）・hush と同じで、英語は聞こえた音をそのまま動詞にしてしまう。
