hostileの語源と覚え方
覚え方
hostis はもと「よそ者」を指し、のちに「敵」の意味に変わった。この変化は古代ローマの文献にも記されている。その hostis から形容詞 hostīlis（敵の・敵意ある）ができ、フランス語を経て英語の hostile になった。
よそ者に向ける警戒の目を思い浮かべると、今の「敵対的な」につながりやすい。「攻撃的な・不寛容な」という場面でも使い、名詞では「敵」を指す。
guest（客）と host（もてなす主人）も同じ「よそ者・客」を表す語につながる。訪ねてきたよそ者が、客にも敵にもなりうると考えると覚えやすい。
