rivalの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 rīvālis（同じ川を使う者・競う相手）に由来する語。rīvus（小川・水路）+ -ālis（〜に関わる）という形で、同じ水路に関わる者という意味が背景にある。「同じものに関わる二者」を、競争相手のイメージにつなげて覚えよう。
a rival company は競合する会社、a business rival は商売上の競争相手。動詞の rival は「〜と競う・〜に匹敵する」で、This rivals the original. なら「これは原作に引けを取らない」。名詞なら相手、動詞なら肩を並べて競うことと整理すると、日本語の「ライバル」から用法を広げられる。
