housingの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 hūs（家）に、動詞を作る -ian が付いた hūsian（宿を与える）ができ、そこへ行為を表す語尾が付いた中英語 housynge（住まわせること・住居）が原義。「家を与えて住まわせる」というイメージ。
この「住まわせる」という意味がそのまま英語 housing（住宅、住宅供給）に受け継がれ、さらに機械の部品などを保護する「覆い・ケース」を指す意味にも広がった（中に大切なものを収めて住まわせるイメージから）。
同じ hūs を含む語には house（家）・household（世帯）がある。hous を見たら「家・収める」と覚えるとよい。
