覚え方
ラテン語 impellō(押し進める・衝動づける)と、その形 impulsus は、in-(中へ)+ pellō(押し出す・追い払う)から成る。内側へ力を押し込むイメージから、物体を前へ動かす「推進力」、人を行動へ押し出す「衝動」になった。
in- のもとにある *en-(中へ)と、pellō のもとにある *pelh₂-(目標や目的地に近づく)を合わせると、「目標へ向かって押し進める」構図が見える。impulse を見たら、内側から前へ押し出す力と考えると、物理的な力と心理的な衝動を一度に覚えられる。
同族語の impulse(衝動・推進力)・impel(駆り立てる)・propel(前へ推進する)では、pel の部分に「押して進める」感覚が残る。compel(強く駆り立てる)も、力で人を動かす語として関連づけるとよい。
