motive（動機）+ -ation（行為・結果・状態を表す名詞を作る）。「人を動かすもの」であり、同時に「動かされている状態」でもある。motor・motion・move と同じ「動く」の一族に属する。

心理学では二つに分けて語られる。intrinsic motivation（内発的動機づけ＝面白いからやる）と extrinsic motivation（外発的動機づけ＝報酬や評価のためにやる）。動かす力がどこから来ているかで分ける見方である。

日本語の「モチベーションが上がらない」は、英語では I'm not motivated. や I've lost my motivation. が自然。my motivation is low という言い方もできるが、英語は形容詞 motivated で人を主語にする方がよく使われる。
