do（行う）+ -th（動作や性質を表す名詞語尾）。古英語 dōn（する）の系統に -th が付いて「なすこと」を名詞にした形が deed で、原義はそのまま「行い」。
「行為」から「（立派な）功績」へ広がり（a good deed＝善行、heroic deeds＝英雄的な行い）、さらに法律では「なされた行為を記した文書」＝「証書・権利書」を指すようになった。the deed to a house は家の権利証。
芯の *dʰeh₁-（置く・なす）は「据える・こしらえる」というイメージ。-th で名詞を作る仲間には growth（成長）・truth（真実）・length（長さ）があり、動詞や形容詞＋-th＝その中身の名詞化と押さえられる。
