ラテン語 recuperō（取り戻す・回復する） が古フランス語 recovree（回復・取り戻すこと） を経て中英語 recoveree（法的に取り戻すこと） となった語。英語では recover + -y（抽象名詞） と読める形になっている。
背後の wre-（後ろへ・再び）+ kap-（つかむ・保持する） は、「手放したものをもう一度つかみ直す」**という情景。健康の回復（make a full recovery）、景気の回復（economic recovery）、データの復旧（data recovery）、奪還（the recovery of stolen goods）と、対象を変えながら同じ芯を保っている。
同じラテン語から直接来た recuperate（体力を回復する）は身体に限られるのに対し、recover はもっと広く使える。re-cover は「覆い直す」ではない点に注意（cover とは別系統）。
