outdoorsの語源と覚え方

out（外に）+ door（戸）+ -s。「戸の外で」から「屋外で・外で」。out は古英語 ūt、door は古英語 duru にさかのぼる、どちらも日常の基本語の組み合わせ。
副詞として eat outdoors（外で食べる）、The event will be held outdoors.（イベントは屋外で行われる）のように使う。名詞の the (great) outdoors は「（大）自然・野外」で、アウトドア好きの人を an outdoors person と言う。
