overhangの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 oferhangan（上に張り出す）以来の語で、現代語でも over-（上に）+ hang（掛かる・ぶら下がる） と読める。「上からせり出して覆いかぶさる」が原義。
hang の背後は *ḱenk-（吊るす）。崖や屋根が前方にせり出した部分（an overhang）、岩登りで頭上に張り出した壁を指す。
経済では「上にのしかかっているもの」から「余剰・過剰在庫」（a debt overhang＝重くのしかかる債務）の意味でも使う。活用は overhang / overhung / overhung。
