overtakeの語源と覚え方

over-（越えて）+ take（取る）。「相手の上を越えて、その位置を取る」から「追いつく・追い越す」。古英語では同じ内容を ofer-（越えて）+ niman（取る） の oferniman（力ずくで奪う）で言っていた。
take の背後には *teh₂g-（触れる）があり、手を触れて自分のものにする、という動作が芯にある。contact（触れ合う）・tactile（触覚の）・intact（手つかずの）と同じ流れ。
車が前の車を抜く（overtake on the right）だけでなく、感情や災難が人に及ぶ意味でも使う（Panic overtook the crowd.）。活用は overtake / overtook / overtaken。
