over-（過度に）+ sized（〜の大きさの）。sized は size（大きさ）+ -ed（〜を持つ）で「ある大きさを持った」。そこに over- が付いて「大きさが過剰な」＝「大きすぎる・特大の」。
an oversized envelope（定形外の大きな封筒）、oversized luggage（大きすぎる荷物）、oversized furniture that won't fit through the door（ドアを通らない大型家具）。服なら an oversized T-shirt（オーバーサイズの T シャツ）。
-ed で「〜を持つ」形容詞を作るのは、talented（才能のある）・blue-eyed（青い目の）と同じ。size はラテン語 sedeō（座る）にさかのぼる語で、sit・session も同じ仲間。
