postpone（延期する）+ -ment（行為やその結果を表す名詞） で「延期」。予定を後ろへずらすこと、またその措置を指す。

postpone は「後（post）に置く」こと。その「置く」の部分は *据える・住まわせることを表す tḱey- にさかのぼり、「決めた場所に据える」感覚を持つ。postponement は「予定を後ろの位置に据え直すこと」と読める。

-ment は動詞を名詞にする（develop → development、agree → agreement）。cancellation（中止）と違い、postponement は やめるのではなく先送り である点が要点。
