ラテン語 repellō（押し返す・追い払う）の現在分詞 repellēns から。= re-（後ろへ）+ pellō（追いやる・押す）で、「押し返し続けているもの」が原義。英語では虫などを寄せつけない「忌避剤」、性質としては「はねつける・不快な」。
pellō の仲間は expel（外へ押し出す→追放する）・compel（強く押す→強制する）・propel（前へ押す→推進する）・repel（追い払う）。pel を見たら「押す」、re- が付けば「押し返す」。
insect repellent（虫よけ）・water-repellent（撥水性の）が定番。人や態度に使うと「ぞっとするほど嫌な」という強い非難になる。
