覚え方
英語 slam は古ノルド語 slæma（強く打つ）に由来するとされる語。何かを勢いよく叩きつける動作を表した語で、意味の大きな変化はなく現代の slam に受け継がれている。
この「強く打つ」という原義から、ドアなどを「バタンと勢いよく閉める」動詞の意味と、その「バタンという音」自体を表す名詞の意味が生まれた。
grand slam（満塁ホームラン・完全制覇）の slam は、札遊びの全勝を表す別の語とされ、語源は不明である（強打の slam に補強された可能性はある）。ドアの slam は slæma の「強打」のイメージのまま覚えるとよい。
