覚え方
suc は「下に」、cumb は「横たわる」。力の下に崩れ落ちて横たわる姿から、抵抗しきれず「屈する」を表す。succumb to pressure なら、断っていたことを周囲に押されて受け入れてしまう場面。
succumb to temptation は誘惑に負けること。to の後ろに、こちらを負かした力が来る。
病気について succumb to an illness と言えば、その病気で亡くなる意味になることもある。抵抗していた力が尽きる点に焦点があり、単に同意するより重い。
