ラテン語 dēcēdō（退く・撤退する・譲る）= dē-（下へ・離れて）+ cēdō（進む・譲る・退く）。そこから dēcessus（退去・離脱）につながり、人生から退くことを表す decease は「死亡・死去」という意味になった。
人がこの世から離れていく、つまり生の場から退くという表現が、死を表す婉曲的な言い方へ発展したもの。通常の die より改まった語感がある。
decease は「この世から退く」と覚える。cēdō を含む語には、場所や立場から退く・譲るという方向のイメージがある。
