ラテン語の triad- という語幹に、-ad（ある数のまとまりを表す名詞を作る） が付いた語で、「三つ組」。
音楽では三つの音を重ねた三和音、化学では三価の元素、哲学では正・反・合の三つ組を指す。分野は違っても「三つでひとまとまり」という形は同じ。
二つ組は dyad、四つ組は tetrad と、同じ型で数を変えられる。中国系の秘密結社を Triad と呼ぶのも、三つの要素を象徴した組織名に由来する英語での呼び方。
